Cannon's Jug Stompers-Viola Lee Blues

Published September 20, 1928

Recorded on September 20, 1928 presumably in Memphis. The lineup is the same as on "Minglewood Blues," only Noah Lewis sings. The line "ain't got a jail sentence, you must be Nashville bound," refers to the common practice in the South at that time of sometimes not sentencing black men who were arrested for certain crimes. Rather, they would often be sent to places where they had to work very hard, which was often worse than a jail sentence.

Subject: Excellent
One of the greatest recordings from the 20th Century in my book.

Subject: Amazing
I agree with the previous reviewer. Americana at its finest. I had been looking for mid to late 60's renderings of this song by the Grateful Dead - and there are many good covers out there, but this copy takes it to another level altogether.

Subject: Real Blues
not many recordings survived "the great depression"
Records for their non-renewable heat source (paper and plastic) became a rare commodity fast in the colder states. It is great that this and many other recordings survive. They are a testament to our heritage as Americans. Music is what defines us as a civilization.
